IENE 2010 Conference on Ecology and Transportation: Improving connections in a changing environment

IENE (Infra Eco Network Europe) is an initiative for creating a transport infrastructure that harmonizes with the surrounding landscape. The secretariat for IENE is currently hosted by the Swedish Biodiversity Centre at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

The theme of the IENE 2010 International Conference on Ecology and Transportation is “Improving connections in a changing environment”. The conference puts a focus on challenges and solutions for achieving an ecologically sustainable pan-European transport infrastructure.

Given the rapid development of road infrastructure especially in the eastern European countries, increasing urbanisation, and an overarching climate threat, there is an urge to improve and ensure ecological connectivity across European landscapes.

Yet, thanks to concurrent achievements in European environmental policies and growing public awareness of habitat fragmentation, there are now opportunities for better integration of infrastructure and ecology. Using policy objectives and public dialogue as a basis for developing interdisciplinary and target-oriented approaches to planning, construction, maintenance and monitoring procedures, we will hopefully accomplish a change in the transport sector towards a greater environmental sustainability.

The conference aims at providing an arena for scientists and engineers, planners and stakeholders, authorities as well as private companies to discuss and develop solutions for a better future.
